It’s just the way it is. Babies get more attention. I know Nate is not a baby anymore but he’s still in that age range where people notice him and talk to him. It happens all the time when we take the kids out to eat or shop. People approach Nate and start goo-goo talking to him. Nia usually doesn’t pay it any mind but I think she’s started to catch on that these strangers are going all silly over her brother and not her. The last time it happened was particularly sweet to me.
The waitress was having a conversation of sorts with Nate. As it continued for a good few minutes, Nia sat up taller, stuck out her head, smiled her hugest smile and batted her big eyes, hoping she’d get something from the lady – anything. The waitress never even glanced up at Nia. She walked away leaving Nia to wonder, “How’s come she didn’t see me?”
Well, I saw you Nia. Mommy always sees you – no matter how many smiles and laughs Nate is sharing with others – you have my attention – and you don’t even have to work for it.
Poor Nia! That's a harsh reality, isn't it? And it's so unfair. It was so hurtful. When people would ignore my older kids, I'd say something like, "Jensen, can you tell the lady what your babys' name is? Which causes the person to look at the older child….. (of course, I'm mean and your nice, you'd probably never do that!!!!)
I am so guilty of this. I always notice the babies…cause I've been so into babies and it never occured to me that this is so obnoxious! I feel so awful!
Hi, Nia. This is your Aunt Ree.
I will ALWAYS notice you–you are the first which is special to me. I was first and I had several "silly" little brothers (one of which is your Daddy) who needed my help (or so I thought) just like Nate needs you for a big sister. Nate is special to me too because he is a goofball and he makes me laugh, but nobody, not even baby Ella, will wake up in the morning with me and snuggle on the couch like you or read a book as nicely as you or say my name just exactly like you or watch my favorite Little Mermaid all the way through like you do. I love you very much, Antonia. You are the first and (secretly) the BEST.
